Dr. Daniel Amen
Dr. Daniel Amen is a psychiatrist who made brain imaging famous. Across his Amen Clinics he has assembled one of the world’s largest databases of SPECT scans, and his bestseller “Change Your Brain, Change Your Life” popularized a simple, radical reframe: psychiatric symptoms are brain problems, and brains are changeable.
His programme is refreshingly physical — protect your head, sleep properly, move daily, stabilize blood sugar, get sleep apnea treated, and kill what he calls ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts) by writing them down and challenging them. That last tool is straight cognitive behavioural therapy and is genuinely well-supported. Worth knowing: mainstream psychiatry does not accept SPECT imaging as a diagnostic tool for conditions like ADHD or depression, and Amen’s clinical use of it remains contested. Take the lifestyle-and-neuroplasticity message, which is strong, and treat the scan-based diagnostics as unsettled.
