Carol Dweck is the Stanford psychologist behind one of the most influential ideas in modern education: mindset. Her research distinguishes a fixed mindset — the belief that ability is innate and finite — from a growth mindset, the belief that ability develops through effort, strategy, and feedback. Her book “Mindset” made the distinction a household concept.

The practical upshot is about how you interpret difficulty. In a fixed frame, struggle is evidence you lack talent, so you avoid challenge and hide mistakes. In a growth frame, struggle is the sensation of learning, so you go looking for harder problems. Dweck’s applied advice is to praise process over person — “you found a good strategy” rather than “you’re so clever” — and to attach the word “yet” to any admission of inability. One honest caveat: large replication studies have found mindset interventions produce considerably smaller effects than early enthusiasm suggested, especially at scale. The framing is still useful; the magic bullet isn’t.
